The 19th century mug-shot differed a whole lot from the kind of photographs we are familiar with today. Although photography became more and more popularised towards the end of the 19th century, this kind of search notice existed as well. The wanted criminal was scetched by an artist and the search notice was spread among the autorities of the neighbouring countries. Criminals captured on Belgian territory were handed over to the foreign authorities demanding their extradition.
